Group 2 reflections
January 30th, 2021
Humans have been communicating for four million years. With the information from my other classmates' presentations that seems about right. Being able to communicate effectively is perhaps the most important of all life skills. It is what enables us to pass information to other people, and to understand what is said to us. Communication at its simplest, is an act of transferring information from one place to another.
For instance group one discussed culture and communication. Culture is basically a set of shared values that a group of people holds. Such values affect how you think and act and, more importantly, the kind of criteria by which you judge others. Group three mentioned intercultural communication which referred to the interactions that occur between people whose cultures are so different that communication between them is challenging. Intercultural communication also requires an understanding that different cultures have different customs, standards, social mores, and even thought patterns. Which I also felt was important because people still have trouble understanding those from different cultures, they don't need to visit other countries to meet people of different cultures. The United states is a multicultural society, which includes not only recent immigrants, but also descendants of earlier immigrants who were born here in the united states. Which gives people the chance to learn and understand other people who are from different cultures, their customs, norms, and values. Ethnicity is just as extensive as culture. Ethnicity is based on a shared cultural identity that is learned. For example, people might identify their race as African American or Black, Asian, European or White, or some other race. Ethnicity refers to shared cultural characteristics such as language, ancestry, practices, and beliefs. Some people believe that race and ethnicity are the same but not quite. Race and ethnicity are used to categorize certain sections of the population. In basic terms, race describes physical traits, and ethnicity refers to cultural identification.Race may also be identified as something you inherit while ethnicity is something you learn.
Leadership is the power or ability to lead other people. Leadership is the ability to direct myself and influence those around me, role model expected behaviors, and leverage strengths so everyone feels fulfilled and valued. There are two basic types of task leadership and group maintenance leadership: Task Leadership Roles usually include giving and seeking information from the group, asking the opinions of all group members, keeping the group energized, evaluating performance and giving direction to the group. Which group three had discussed in their presentation.Group communication is important because it is through messages that groups make decisions, manage conflict, and build the rapport that is necessary to keep the group going in difficult circumstances and what the group can accomplish.
In conclusion i honestly thought both group one and group three did an amazing job at explaining and summarizing the concept of communication, leadership, culture and race. I couldn't ask for a better verbalized presentation. Each chapter was easy and crystal clear to understand. Can't wait to learn more from my peers and see what other great presentations they got in store for the future. -Kisha Zuniga
