Chapter Reflections

A little while back, groups in my speech class had to create a PowerPoint presentation for three fascinating chapters. The chapters had information on intercultural communication, communicating in groups, group leadership and problem solving. Each group presented their topics wonderfully and effortlessly. I enjoyed seeing how the other groups interpreted the chapter that they were assigned. Moreover, I learned a good amount of information from each group including my own. I would like to share with you my experience as a listener and presenter.             Group one was the first to present in the week. Their chapter was about intercultural communication. The group went through and gave examples of different definitions. For instance, culture was defined as the system of shared values, beliefs, attitudes, and norms that guides what is justified appropriate among a group of people. Things ...

Group Reflections

Gabriel Hidalgo  January 31st, 2021  SPC1017 Group Presentations Reflections           When working as a team many factors have to be taken into consideration in order to achieve success as a whole. The ability to communicate and understand is a very valuable quality necessary for one's overall success. After carefully listening to each group's presentations I have learned a huge amount of things in regards of effective team work and if done right, the success that may come with it. I think all groups were able to achieve their goal and completed their presentation exceptionally.       Group 1 was assigned chapter 3. I think the group was very successful in separating the individual work so that everyone had an equal chance to speak. Chapter 3 talks about Intercultural Communications which to quickly summarize discusses the challenges faced by people from different cultures. These cultural differences may lead overlaps in belie...
Samira Gonzalez Communication is very important and plays a big role in our lives. Good communication skills are essential and allows all of us to understand information more accurately and quickly. Being able to communicate effectively is a vital life skill. All the groups presentations have given examples and explained their part to make this valid. In group 1, they presented chapter 3 which talks about intercultural communication. In their presentation they talk about how culture is the system of shared values, beliefs, attitudes, and norms that guides what is considered appropriate among an identifiable group of people. They also mention how intercultural communication refers to the interactions that occurs between people whose cultures are so different that the communication between them is altered. Intercultural communications offers the ability to deal across cultures. This means having more and more contact with people who are culturally different. Group 1 also mentioned someth...

Reflections

Anthony Volquez-Colon SPC1017-2213-5946 Reflections  Communication is crucial to everyone living and breathing.   Communicating allows us to share our views, thoughts and processes, allows us to help others and allow others to help us.   The three wonderful presentations taught me a great amount of knowledge with the topic of communication in groups and how it works in different situations and perspectives.   Group one, the first group to present did an amazing job presenting their chapter. Chapter 3 was about Intercultural Communication. It taught us about the relationship between culture and communication. Intercultural communication is interactions that occur between people whose cultures are so different that communication between them is challenging.   One of my favorite parts of Group 1’s presentation is where they showed a video clip from the show “Big Mouth” showing how different settings call for different ways of acting/talking.   Another part...
Group 2 reflections  January 30th, 2021 Humans have been communicating for four million years. With the information from my other classmates' presentations that seems about right. Being able to communicate effectively is perhaps the most important of all life skills. It is what enables us to pass information to other people, and to understand what is said to us. Communication at its simplest, is an act of transferring information from one place to another.  For instance group one discussed culture and communication. Culture i s basically a set of shared values that a group of people holds. Such values affect how you think and act and, more importantly, the kind of criteria by which you judge others. Group three mentioned intercultural communication which referred to the interactions that occur between people whose cultures are so different that communication between them is challenging. I ntercultural communication also requires an understanding that different cultures...

Presentation reflection

Michael Navarro The group presentations helped me learn more about communication. Communication is something that we need to understand each other. The chapters each group had to present were focused on intercultural communication and group communication. Group 1 had to present chapter 3, which is about intercultural communication. Intercultural communication refers to the interaction that occurs between people whose cultures are so different that communication between them is challenging. During Group 1’s presentation, they talked about dominant cultures, co-cultures and cultural identity. While they were talking about co-cultures, they mentioned code switch, which people use to alter their linguistic and nonverbal patterns depending on who they’re talking to. For example, I speak to my parents in Spanish, but I speak English when I’m with my friends. My group presented chapter 9, which talks about communicating in groups. The chap...

Reflection of Projects

Throughout the classes' presentations, I learned a lot of useful information when it comes to the topic of communications and how human communication works in different settings. Being able to communicate is one of the most essential and important aspects of human life, we need it in order to progress individually and as a whole. There are many different things that affect how and why we communicate, and that's something that was focused on throughout the presentations.  For example, chapter 3 talked about cultures and intercultural communication. Group 1 spoke about culture and how culture affects communication. Culture is the system of shared values, beliefs, and norms a group of people, but these things can vary greatly when looking into different groups. Values are one of the most important things within cultures. Group 1 mentioned something called, culture shock, a psychological discomfort when engaging in a new cultural situation. I believe that this is s...
