Reflection of Projects

Throughout the classes' presentations, I learned a lot of useful information when it comes to the topic of communications and how human communication works in different settings. Being able to communicate is one of the most essential and important aspects of human life, we need it in order to progress individually and as a whole. There are many different things that affect how and why we communicate, and that's something that was focused on throughout the presentations.

For example, chapter 3 talked about cultures and intercultural communication. Group 1 spoke about culture and how culture affects communication. Culture is the system of shared values, beliefs, and norms a group of people, but these things can vary greatly when looking into different groups. Values are one of the most important things within cultures. Group 1 mentioned something called, culture shock, a psychological discomfort when engaging in a new cultural situation. I believe that this is something that many people seem to face when traveling to different countries. Many people travel and aren't open to the rich cultures they are traveling to, but they should change this because that's one of the most important things to keep in mind. Being respectful to those that are natives to the country you're visiting is critical. Some cultures are dominant within countries and this will cause anyone that visits a country to develop and adapt that culture. Race and ethnicity hold a connection to culture as many races and ethnicities follow cultures within that race, keeping it alive. There are two types of uncertainty-avoidance cultures, high and low. Low uncertainty-avoidance cultures are less-driven to control unpredictable people, relationships, and events. High uncertainty-avoidance cultures have a lower tolerance for uncertainty and a high need to control unpredictable people, relationships, or events. Many people in the dominant culture may also identify with certain aspects and features of that culture.

Group 3 touched on chapter 10, group leadership and problem-solving. Groups thrive on good communication, and it's impossible for a group to function properly without proper communication. This can make or break a group and bring them closer to their common goal. Leadership relies on setting these common goals and outlining the group's activities. The workload must be shared among the group in an effort to remain fair and civil amongst group members. Groups have different roles that have varying roles and help in maintaining the group together. These are normally referred to as maintenance roles. One example of these roles in tension relivers, which help relieve stress through humor.

Overall, the group presentations did a very good job in expressing and summarizing each chapter. I learned a lot through these presentations and look forward to learning more in future ones!
