Reflections
Communication is crucial to everyone living and breathing. Communicating allows us to share our views, thoughts and processes, allows us to help others and allow others to help us. The three wonderful presentations taught me a great amount of knowledge with the topic of communication in groups and how it works in different situations and perspectives.
Group one, the first group to present did an amazing job presenting their chapter. Chapter 3 was about Intercultural Communication. It taught us about the relationship between culture and communication. Intercultural communication is interactions that occur between people whose cultures are so different that communication between them is challenging. One of my favorite parts of Group 1’s presentation is where they showed a video clip from the show “Big Mouth” showing how different settings call for different ways of acting/talking. Another part of this presentation that I liked is that it brought up the societal norms of individualism. An example is masculinity/femininity. I don’t believe that there should be stereotypes or societal norms, I believe everyone is themselves and everyone should live to the way that makes them happy.
Group 3 presented chapter 10. Chapter 10 is about Group leadership and problem solving. This presentation was especially important to me since I am the leader of a group in this class, this presentation/chapter helped me out in bettering my leadership skills. Leadership is a process whereby an individual influences a group of individuals to achieve a common goal. I really enjoyed the video they showed of the meeting that wasn’t planned out in advance. The clip was particularly important to me because it showed me what can happen if I as a leader don’t plan out a meeting thoroughly. It gave me a lot tips on how to plan a meeting to share common goals and leave the meeting with an accomplished project/idea. Another clip that helped me was also the one where the man showed you how to know if a member is doing their part and how to handle your group members to make the group a comfortable but sufficient place to get projects done. It was a great presentation.
Lastly was my group, Group 2. We presented chapter 9 which is about communicating in groups. This chapter I believe to be very important. Wherever you are, no matter what age, race, religion, everything is in groups, where you look. Your family is a type of group, friends, clubs, team, classmates, even your pets are a type a group. Group communication is essential everywhere you go. Group communication is all the verbal and non verbal messages shared among members of the group. There’s many ways to also communicate with your groups. You can communicate face to face, through messaging software and even through virtual spaces, such as FaceTime, zoom and blackboard. Another great thing about this chapter is apart from showing you how to make a great group environment it also shows you the possibility of obstacles that can come from a group. Everyone is different and hav different ways of viewing different things, so it’s always great to have that possibility in the back of your mind.
