Presentation reflection
Michael Navarro
The group
presentations helped me learn more about communication. Communication is
something that we need to understand each other. The chapters each group had to
present were focused on intercultural communication and group communication.
Group 1 had
to present chapter 3, which is about intercultural communication. Intercultural
communication refers to the interaction that occurs between people whose
cultures are so different that communication between them is challenging.
During Group 1’s presentation, they talked about dominant cultures, co-cultures
and cultural identity. While they were talking about co-cultures, they mentioned
code switch, which people use to alter their linguistic and nonverbal patterns
depending on who they’re talking to. For example, I speak to my parents in
Spanish, but I speak English when I’m with my friends.
My group presented
chapter 9, which talks about communicating in groups. The chapter mostly talks
about the different types of groups, like social groups, supports groups, service
groups, and why communication is important for every one of them. Group
communication is important because it’s what makes participating in groups
either a positive or negative experience. The chapter also talks about the conflict
in groups and the best way to resolve them.
Group 3
presented chapter 10, which is about group leadership and problem-solving.
Communication can make or break a group. Without proper communication, a group
will be disorganized and not get things done. A group leader is relied on
outlining the group's activities. The work should be shared among the group, so
nobody feels overwhelmed. Groups sometimes have task roles to help the groups acquire,
process, or apply information that contributes directly to completing a task.
These roles can be givers, seekers, and analyzers. While sometimes people are
given a maintenance role to help a group develop and maintain cohesion,
commitment, and positive working relationships. These roles can be supporters,
interpreters, and tension relievers.
All in all, I
think each group did a fantastic job on summarizing how communication is important
to both people of different cultures and groups. I look forward to working with
my group again in the future.
Very good blog!
