Reflections
One of the most vital things for us as humans is communication, we are social creatures by nature. Understanding, practicing, and embracing communication opens doors to a healthier more progressive lifestyle. Throughout the course of these three presentations in class, I acquired knowledge on all kinds of group interactions and scenarios that I was not aware of before.
Within group one's presentation of chapter three, many good things were demonstrated in regards of how culture impacts and influences our way of communicating with one another. Intercultural communication was a term used by group one to describe communications between two or more distinct cultures. I learned that when two cultures are vastly different and attempt to interact with one another, it can be more challenging to understand one another's perspective. This can be due to societal norms set by a culture such as gender roles or religious beliefs. The cartoon video they showed us of a guy molding his way of talking depending on what type of people he is talking to really resonated with me. Although I had no true idea of the term used to describe this communication adaptation, I have done it many times in the past.
Chapter ten, presented by group three, was based on Group leadership and problem solving. This presentation assisted me with showing me ways of being an effective group leader that can influence his group to properly achieve a common goal. Videos such as the one giving advice on how to make your group feel comfortable with each other and still be effective was one of the most helpful ones. I believe a group's ability to communicate ideas freely with respect and without judgement or fear of offending is crucial for a leader to establish within a group. I believe different perspectives can be a gateway to quicker problem solving. Another good video was the one that showed the importance of planning out meetings effectively to get the best results possible with ideas and development of projects.
The last group I will write about is group two which is the group I was in. We presented chapter nine which was based on communicating in groups, a universal occurrence anyone alive must go through. This is one of the most important presentations with regards to identifying group types as well as differences between healthy groups, group dilemmas, etc. Here we learn how your behavior, or your perception differ depending on what kind of group you are associating with. Distinct kinds include families, teams, co-workers, friends, classmates, and more. We discuss many ways of communication such as face to face, FaceTime, messaging, and Zoom. I discussed pseudo-conflict, meaning “fake conflict” or a misrepresentation between group members in which they agree on something but think they do not due to poor communication. Solutions included effective listening, perception-checking, paraphrasing skills. I also helped by describing what a synergetic group is like. Healthy groups can develop a collective intelligence that can surpass what one talented individual can do.
Overall, I learned a good number of things from my group as well as the other presentation and am glad I got to partake in this.
